I picked up my son from school today and, as we were approaching our house, a dog was having a poo on the pavement outside my neighbour’s house. The owner immediately tried to make a swift exit without picking it up (doesn't surprise me in the least) despite it being very obvious that I’d seen the whole thing. I cshouted over and asked if he was planning to pick up his dog’s mess. Frozen like a rabbit in headlights he started fumbling around in his pockets, clearly he didn’t have anything to pick it up with.

In a rare moment of maturity, I decided to be diplomatic rather than lose my cool and I asked if he’d like a dog poo bag (I occasionally look after a friend’s dog, so I always have some at home), and went to grab him a handful. From my window, I watched him pick up the dog poo, What I didn’t see but discovered later was that he then threw the bagged poo onto the pavement right next to where he’d picked it up despite there being two public bins literally about ten metres away. Why????

I took my bins out last Monday and a bloke did the same but it was outside my gate, I asked him to pick it up as there's a £150 fine as it's a small lane leading to a Childrens Park and Fields where decent folk let there dogs off the lead to do there business and then they pick it up, he went off on 1 saying this isn't your land which it actually is we just moved our fence line slightly in as we agreed with our neighbors so we could park a car outside, I offered him a bag he told me to do it myself which I promptly did then I threw it at his feet and then he picked it up walked less than 20mtr's and put it in the bin.
So I guess I would consider myself between the lines of right and wrong but hey the poo got binned I saved him some cash and I didn't get nicked. win win all round

Hang on - I’m a people.

I’m well aware of most of the things that are wrong with me. I’ll apologise now. At 78 I’m not about to change.

Luckily I find most people more tolerant than am I so we tend to get along.

No one here has posted that most of the people that they met today were fine and some of them even smiled.

The majority of us sit around the median. :lmao: However there are different people that different people find difficult.
We all make mistakes and are difficult at times.
Add that all together and it might look as if most people have something wrong most of the time but in fact most of us rub along fine most of the time.

Mostly.

I think the majority of dog owners don't always pick up after their dogs. I say that as a dog owner, although sadly I'm between dogs at the moment. I've always encouraged our dog to use our garden and if she went in public it was always picked up and normally taken home, rarely binned (I wouldn't like to live near a dog waste bin). I'm sure I've mentioned chasing a floater about on a beach before...

I've said it before, but I think it's worth reiterating.....service dogs relieve themselves in a regular routine, some (guide dogs) with a specific word or command....they're healthy, they're happy, they are just taught to go when it's in an appropriate place....not on a public footpath or park or someone else's garden.

Why don't other dog owners train their dogs properly ?

It's laziness and complete disregard for other people, including children. We walk to and from school, the walk consists of me keeping an eye on the pavement ahead and trying to not let my 6yo son step in anything. That includes on the pavement outside the school itself. Yes, some dog owners will even leave it right outside a primary schools front gate :( and this isn't every now and again, there's fresh dog mess left on pavements on a daily basis.

Also fails one of the five freedoms a dog has the right to foul anywhere it sees fit the owners responsibilty is to clean after

No. In a civiized society, when we know the pathogens in dog scat, and the problems they cause, then training your dog properly is the responsible behaviour of a responsible owner.

After all, if we can train children to 'go before you leave', why don't more folks train their dogs ?

We should introduce a dog owning license. If your dog fouls the pavement and it's not cleared you get 3 points and a fine. If you get more than 9 points you no longer have a license to keep a dog (I know, totally impractical, but something needs doing).

I feel the same about cats - we've got to reduce the 10+ million somehow :)

I'm not somebody who likes to regulate everything, but I absolutely agree that there should be some form of license, and part of the reason I think there should be one is because it might dissuade some impulsive ownership. Anyone who is serious about long term ownership, it will simply be one small hurdle.

Cats are a whole other issue.
A kitten is taught by it's mother as soon as it's eyes are open to toilet properly.
I have watched three of my cats line their kittens up and make them go through the litter box ( or sand tray, one litter was mostly outdoors that Summer) properly. If they didn't bury it well enough, she literally lifted them back in to finish the job.

I honestly think that in our over filled islands that if you're a pet owner then it's up to you to deal with all their needs properly.

I know it's not always easy, but cats and dogs do carry diseases, those zoonoses are not good things.

My friend installed stock fencing along side the footpath that runs down the side of his field.

People complained to the council because they had always had the run of it for walking their dogs. Many had left **** everywhere. Once the fence was up some of those who did bag it threw it into the field or hung it on the style. I thought that took special effort to be disgusting.
