What is sharp?

I know that for us the idea is to be able to shave hair.

Is shaving the forearm till it's smooth as a baby's bum sharp if it takes 3 or 4 strokes to do it classed as "scary sharp"

When you have a shave in the morning it takes a few passes to get a smooth chin and thats called sharp.

So is this sharp or should i continue stropping?

You get usable sharp... Shaving sharp, and 'Hair popping Sharp'

They all do the job, but the later makes you grin slightly more.

Hair popping sharp? = Its when the hair physically jumps from the skin. You don't feel any resistance as the hair cuts.

Excessive, but fun from time to time.

Sharp is when it does the cutting job you need it to do

shaving hair is not a good indicator IMO tho i do do it .
I can shave hair after grinding a bevel with 80gt belt and a quick rub on the polisher to get the burr off not a nice working edge tho

What is sharp?...

Before you can answer this one, you need to ask the question "What is cutting?"

There's a paper on the site somewhere about sharpening razor blades. It's worth a read if you have that kind of determination.

Executive summary: Don't overdo it.

I can featherstick a fine hair with my razor - but that's useless for cutting paper, or whittling. My mora whittling knife will shave hair off my arm, but not pop hair. But it does a fine job of taking paper-thin slices off wood, or cutting carpet.

Horses for courses, sharpen for the job at hand.
