Definitely a hoverfly. there's a big bend in one of the wing veins. Difficult to get a sense of scale, but I'd say one of the drone flies, genus Eristalis.

Failing that it is the narcissus fly, Merodon equestris, which is rather smaller.
 
Probably an Eristalis then Niels. There are lots of species, and they are not easy to distinguish, but they generally mimic honeybees, and so are of similar size to the bees. Narcissus fly is half that size.
