That’s clever!
Does it need a waterproof finish to be used in the garden or it’s it naturally OK?

It's naturally OK so long as you don't leave it out in the rain for more than a few hours, I made it with all brown (bark on) willow for this reason. Bear in mind that brown willow is soaked for days in a tank of water to make it pliable for weaving. Whereas buff (bark off) willow soaks for half an hour to an hour to make it similarly pliable.

That said, f I was using it regularly in wet conditios I would probably coat the base at least with some sort of spray on wax. Or use it with a wax canvas sheet to pop underneath (good for any tool bag to ensure the bag and therefore the tools are as dry as possible to avoid rust).

I made an empty box.

I am sorting my kit at work...have a ton of leather bits...and to be frank, few big pieces.

(Memo; must tell management to go leather shopping.)

Ive got two belt waste boxes into one box now. Odd shapes discarded...and Im turning big bits into spiders for Samhain decor.

26 bookmarks.

(They wanted 30 but the high quality calf that came yesterday only did 26...Lucky I have sufficient bits for the rest.)

More spiders and a bat.

I think the pictures are clear enough to show how they are made.

I have been going through my boxes at work; I have vast quantities of bits and little big pieces.

So, I am working on projects to use up bits.

These are made from offcuts of cheap belt leather and some soft thongs. But you can use what you have around.

Nalbinding needle, made from an old bamboo toothbrush handle. Still needs a bit of refining, but I think it's going to work beautifully. 20250902_182420.jpg

Christmas Cakes, I made Christmas cakes.

Soaked all the fruit last night in a concoction of Rum, Cognac and Port and got around to assembling and baking them today (2 of them), rather proud of them to say the least as it's been several years since I last made one. Next job with the remaining fruit is to make a Christmas pudding, need to get some suet tomorrow otherwise I would have done that today as well.

Christmas Cakes, I made Christmas cakes.
Stir Up Sunday isn’t till the end of November :) but my gran always used to make next years cakes and puds on this years Stir Up day. They were heavily pickled in alcohol and revived at the end of twelve months with brandy.

My grandfather had signed the (temperance) pledge but it seems that culinary booze doesn’t count.

It seems odd to think that I’m talking about a practice by people whom I knew, from over a century ago :)

My Nan used to make them in the first week of October, as it coincided with a visit from Germany of her daughter (my aunt), and son in law who always liked to take a couple back with them. They never skipped a visit to the creamery at Hawes either so as to ensure a truckle of Wensleydale went back with them too.

Mine will be fed once a week until the first of `December and then just left plain (ie no marzipan or icing), we'll cut into the first one Christmas Eve.

Soup. Leek parsnip carrot and potato, with lots of black pepper, garlic and mixed herbs. Served with g/f toasted sourdough.
deliciously warming and hugge on a cold wet day.
