The goal was to carve a matching knife and fork set from a solid billet of damascus steel.
The two utensils needed to slot together to form “a single unit”.
The initial design translated into wood.....
The two damascus billets, one with a left hand twist, the other with the right hand twist.
And now the easy part (
)….. Simply remove all the steel we do not need…..
There was some discussion in the beginning about whether to forge the knife and fork out of a billet,
but I decided to go for the stock removal method in order to cut right into the core of the twist pattern.
The aluminium templates mark the side and top elevations of the two utensils.
The basic utensils now rough cut out of the damascus billets with a bandsaw.
This was the first chance to see the twist pattern coming out in the blade and the corresponding “stars” appearing along the underside of the handle.
The rough cut of the bandsaw shows clearly on the fork, all of which have to be cleaned out with a handmade file.
