it was my eighteenth birthday the a few weeks ago and yesterday a parcel arrived for me throught the post. as the postman handed the parcel over to me i knew exactly what it was, altought it did not feel heavy enough. before i rip off all the packaging i wait until my mother got back from work. i must say that, that hour in which i sat staring at the parcel was one of the longest hours i have spent in my life. i felt exactly like a child awaiting to open the first present on christmas morning.

once my mother had return from work i open the parcel and to my delight a beautifully crafted wetterling axe sliped out on to the table. i don't think that i could have chosen a better axe. if my sister is reading this when i would like to say:
:Wow: THANKS EM!! :Wow:
and :You_Rock_

i can not wait to use it. if any of you guys could give me any pointers on how to care for it and use it properly that would be great. because it is only my second axe which i have had a the first was a £5 disarster!

THANKS EM :You_Rock_

Excellent, It's always nice to get something that you really want and can be put to good use.

Careful with it though, it's a dangerous bit of kit. If you have experience then forgive me for telling you to suck egg, if you've not then see if you can find someone to give you some tips. A good book might be very useful as well.

Good luck with it ;)

this might sound a little crazy to you guys but i when i got a training mora knife a couple of mouths back the blade was so sharpe that i was too scared to use it for about a week! all i had before the knife was a swiss army knife a good one but it was still just a folding knife. when i did start using it i always wear leather gloves because it still worries me. someday i will have the courge to use it without gloves but until i know little more about what i am doing i keep wearing them.

Nothing to be nervous about, well, except for the fact that leather gloves reduce your ability to properly and consistently grip the tool. However, when sharpening an axe, it is proper to wear a heavy pair of leather gloves.

Congratulations on your new axe. Which model did you get? I purchased a Large Hunters axe a short time ago and it's a dandy.

I wanted to post a site on the use and care of axes, but lost it when my system went down the other day. Check out old Jimbo's site. He has some excellent information on the care and use of axes.

Anyways, one tip that I can pass on, relates to the sharpening of your new axe. The bevels on the Wetterling axe are usually very good, so there is no need to do anything with them. Because of the hardness of the steel in your new axe, don't bother to put a file to it. Never use a power grinder on your new axe. It will heat the metal of the axe and can change the temper.

It was recommended to me to use diamond hones to properly hone the axe to a razors edge. I am currently practicing my honing on a couple of cheap hatchets that I've had for years. When I am confident that I can do a proper job on the Wetterling, then I will give it a go.

Here here. 1 mora training knife + 2 outings = 3 cuts

Lore just beat me to it, but the only safe way not to get cut is to think about where the knife will go after it cuts/ slips. It's a bit like being a beginner at playing pool, in that you forget about placing the cue ball because you just want to pot something. That's why the white keeps going in the pocket!

Contgratulations on your prezzie, although for the longest time I thought I was the youngest member on this forum. Somebody famous wrote something once about the "virility of youth" :D

On a more serious note, a sharp knife (or axe) is a happy knife, and a dull one is very dangerous. Keep 'em sharp, because you'll need less force to cut (or chop) and if/when you slice yourself, you'll find the cuts less jagged and they'll heal up faster.
