Now that is how I would spend my money! I have always wanted one of these, and if the ubiquitous Lottery Win came up i would commission a few and crew. Lindisfarne, here we come!

Oh, I have been on one in Norway. It was moored in Oslos Harbour in the summer of 92. No owner was around so I hopped on board and had a sniff about. I know I shouldn't have, but I was in plain view of every one else so obviously couldn't have been up to mischief and a childhood dream was fulfilled. I am currently reading a book called 'A Viking Voyage' by W Hodding Carter, and it mentions a knarr built for Ragnar Thorseth, which had a small cabin fitted in which he sailed around the world in the 90's. From the desription given it was this knarr that I was on, the Saga Siglar. Sadly it sank off Spain shortly after....

Saga Siglar on one of it's many voyages. The small cabin can just about be seen aft of the mast.

The Scottish version is called a Birlinn. The latest one was built by the Galgael Trust and is called *Orcuan*. The 30' boat is spending the Summer on Loch Lomond, there's a site there too for a moot but it'd need to wait until the tourist season is by.

What I would like is the faering from the Gokstad ship, now that's a lovely boat.

Have you seen a Fair Isle yawl? It's v.very similar and they're still being built today.

Beautiful boats and extremely seaworthy. I was lucky enough to sail one from Cork to Portsmouth once, was very wet but a wonderful experience. That's a long way for only a small yawl

Ian Best came to Glasgow and built a F.I. yawl in the Galgael boatyard as part of a larger project involving coastal communities. The yawl is now on Arran, being used for sail training, I believe. He built the yawl in about three weeks flat, fascinating, evey time I looked at it it had grown like time-lapse photography
