Washing a tarp?

i'd do either the 1st post option of wasing it with a wash made for waterproof items. Or do the cloth with luke warm water and leaving it to hang outside to air & dry.

Also you might want to look into fabreeze which is made for getting rid of lots of smells in fabrics, which could very well work for you

Construct an open fire in the hallway, with all the doors to every room open. Then when the smoke has gotten everywhere, don't forget the airing cupboard and all the clothes cupboards, the problem will be sorted.

Everything will smell the same and she won't complain the tarp smells smokey anymore.

Bin liner and put it away but you'll get the smell when you use it near an open fire, best just get used to the smell.
