I'm on a different board aswell as mod. and there is a huge amount of dodats you can build into a board to filter out such spammers.
However they allways find a way to work around it, so its a neverending battle nomatter what.

For the moment we (on the other board) have enabled the letter-verification known from many places, aswell as e-mail verification.
I am experimenting on moderation of the forst few posts, this means making a whole new usergroup in wich all new registrates are put into automatically. This group (1-5 posts, usergroup) cannot post without moderation of the post.

However effective against spammers the last bit is, it does however make it more cumbersome to new users, as their first few posts will not be shown until moderated.

Its a case og pro's and con's really, and i do not believe i have found any decent other way to do this, yet.

I don't believe that BCUK is as troubled by it as many other places though. However that might change.

The "new" spammer, actually posts a sort of personal post with a little intro and a question that appears valid enough. However the question naturally leads to people googling the item, wich almost for certain is some sort of internet hacking program under a cunning alias, meds again under alias's, or simple pornography under an alias. It is also spam, as the question is search-engine targeted, and search engine hits almost allways leads to cashflow for the spammer (commercials and what not).

Oh the good beautyful and bountyful world of internet i suppose

Probably a naive question, but how do they make money out of doing this? They obviously have a big incentive, otherwise they would not bother with it.

Quite easily actually. You can add a commercial to your site, wich sends you, say 0.0001 cent for each search engine hit. No master degree in mathematics required to do the math on almost countless hits and the results on your bankaccount ;)

Many people have such comemrcials on their sites, and it is a nice and easy way of getting funds. The problem with spamming only occurs when its the cashflow itself thats the initiative, thus producing the need for spambots and spammers.
More hits = more cash.

And it is almost impossible to get rid of spamming on a board, it appears to me that the more people who knows a certain board, the more visits that board gets, and inevitably the site gets "bumped" in searchengines. When that happens, the site gets more and more targeted by spammers, in order to achieve more hits.

The circle of evil has begun ;)
