Bearclaw Bushcraft have just added a couple of the ventile smocks to their website. The Antarctic Smock appears to be of an excellent construction and features lots of cool additions. Im in the process of finding funding for one myself.

Here is a link to the site http://www.bearclawbushcraft.co.uk then look under trading post and clothing. For more info on the jacket i found the jacket manufacturer here: http://www.west-winds.co.uk/

I am afraid to say that "cheap" and "ventile" don't belong in the same sentence (which is a crying shame).

West-Winds is probably one of the best places as far as cost is concerned, you could also try Country Innovations as they currently have the likes of the stalker jacket for £150. Snowsled are very highly regarded, but they are probably the most expensive of the three.

I hope that this will be of some use to you:)

I can give you opinions on west-winds kit as I own a number of bits of it (I have a short parka (they don't make it anymore) and a windshirt as well as shirts and trousers from them).

How to Find a Ventile Jacket:

Step 1: Ask your Father if any of his old climbing buddies are still alive.

Step 2: Remember that old guy your Dad always drinks beer with and tells stories of days gone by?

Step 3: Pick up the phone.

Step 4: Politely ask that old guy if he wouldn't mind going through his stash of kit to find his old Ventile anorak, the one he wore in Peru and Afghanistan when he went there with your Dad.

Step 5: He finds it, washes it, irons it, (because he's a gentleman) and brings it to you on your birthday.

Step 6: You wear it until it dies.

The End

Hi,

I got a ventile over the head type jacket from a company in Scotland called Hilltrek, the web site doesn't appear to work at the moment though.

I can also recommend Hilltrek smocks, excellent quality for about half the price of a Westwinds or Snowsled.

I've just been talking to the guys at Tamarack and they're hoping to put together a ventile smock with lots of bushcraft friendly features in the next few weeks/month or two.
