Ventile Jacket advice needed!

I was told about a ventile jacket earlier that is on sale for £100 from Country Innovations.
Thanks for the info but I really need a jacket rather than a smock.
 
Go for the Country Innovations one then mate if they have your size (they only have small and XL) as the westwinds one on bearclaw is a over the head smock type.

Cheers Kato, I read the read up on Westwinds website ref the bearclaw smock, it isn't designed to handle our temperate weather although the bearclaw site says it is designed for bushcraft. What a load of rubbish, it was designed for the Antarctic survey teams!
Why do some bushcraft companies advertise gear like this when it is blatently not right?

I spent some time with Lars in February, his ventile jacket was an 'pull on over your head, single big pocket on the front type'.

I purchased my jacket from the folks at Bison...

Pricey at £230 but it has taken a few knocks and has hardly been of my back during the past two years but still looks new :)

I own two issue SAS smocks, and neither of them are ventile! they are windproof but not ventile!
 
I do have an SAS pattern smock in Ventile (cheers Spacemonkey).

They are avialable (tailor made) from Sasskit. Not £80 though sadly. Mine cost less than a Bearclaw one though. Its 1 1/2 layer (single layer - double on shoulders, elbows etc.). When SM and I got ours they were a special on a half roll of Ventile they had kicking about and cost..£135?. They have since started doing "proper" ones but I don't know the cost.

I love mine though. If I rip it I'll pay whatever it costs to replace!

John Fenna owns a Bison bushcraft Ventile and he assures me it is very good, £230 might sound alot but if it is a quality garment then its worth paying for.

I'll have to think about it, the more I look into ventile jackets the variations I come across.
For instance, Westwinds do a jacket that is double layered but also has triple layering across the shoulders. http://www.west-winds.co.uk/

Country innovations do a single layer ventile -over the head job - that has a polycotton lining.

And then there is the BCUK jacket which has been tried and tested by members on this site.

There is so much to choose from, I really didn't anticipate this much choice, I will just have to make up my mind on one and go for it, But which one???????:banghead:

I will have to have a looksee at their site, this sounds interesting because I actually love my SAS smocks.

Edit: I have just looked at their site and unless Cotton Gaberdine is another name for ventile then they don't make an SAS smock in ventile, yours might have been a one off, if so your a lucky dude!
They might make one from ventile if you were to contact them like you did. But even the cotton gaberdine field smock is £139.99!
Oh well back to the drawing board!:burnout:

Its a great jacket - I love mine!

The phone call from a proper military tailor that asks "does sir wish to wear body armour under it" is just so cool!

Ok I found the Ventile Smocks in Silvermans, the New DPM Ventile SAS smock is from £50.00 but only in sizes 38-40(S or M)

The other DPM Ventile smock is £199.00 for the single layer ventile but there is only one left which is a size Large.
The other one is a double layer DPM smock-ventile for £250 but again there is only one left which is size medium.

And I need a XLarge - just my luck!:rolleyes:

I think I may call SASSKit and ask them for a quote. Because of all the jackets I do have the SAS smocks are by far my favourite!

I dont think Bearclaw are being misleading because ventile is a very versatile fabric,
you could use that smock in very cold,windy conditions (Antarctic) or for bushcraft good around fires and weatherproof or even in the jungle as its mozzi proof and very breathable.The SASSKit ventile smock sounds very interesting and i think im going to save up and get one of them instead of the hillgear smock then again i might get the BCUK jacket if the price is right :)

No pictures, I'm afraid, but the BCUK jacket certainly gets the thumbs up. It is well cut, the pockets are all in the right place, the cuffs are great and the hood is fantastic. It's been out in all sorts of grotty weather and has not let me down. I can't remember how much I paid for it but I think it hovered around the £200 mark. Two hundred incredibly well spent: I love it and wear it nearly every day.
