Underground bees?!

By our front door the bees are harvesting from our lavender in large numbers. What is particularly nice is that some might be Cornish Black Bees once believed extinct.

I was once playing golf on course near Ayr a few years ago, on one of the holes there was a fenced off area in the rough which contained an underground bee or wasp nest. The noise they made was unbelievable, you could pick up a low hum from 15 to 20 yards away but get any closer and it was almost deafening.

we have leaf cutter bees that use an old pot - the plants long since died but we've left it where it is.

I spend many an hour watching the productive little buggers coming and going...

I had never heard of leafcutter bees until the other day when I was trying to find out what had been taking lumps out of our Wisteria.
