Highly prized by the inuit, its supposedly much warmer than every other wool. Academic for me though-the price of the stuff is immense.
What I have read from various trade publications, the claim that qiviut is "warmer" than other kind of protein fibres is not true. According to study "Fiber characteristics of qiviut and guard hair from wild muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus)" by Rowell et al., most qiviut fibres are between 10 and 20 µm in diameter. This is finer than mohair, but around the same than the better cashmere or angora. Thus I would say that invest your money to good cashmere or angora instead of expensive qiviut or vicuña.

Good info Martii :)

I have done exactly what you suggest. Been using Angora and Cashmere for a year now.

This thread was a fine idea wasnt it? :P I am loving all this info. As for my jumper, alas, twas a typo. 92% Lambswool and 8% Cashmere. Spent all day in a suit, pining for my jumper. Charity shops have been very fruitful so far, bringing up new wool, cashmere, lambswool and some shetland stuff. As I now know theres no difference, I shall buy the lot :P Cheapest clothes I've bought so far!

Now all I need is some wool trousers...Where's Wayland? :P

Oh, and another vote for the sticky!

Wool trousers are quite hard to come by. Plenty in the US but then you get stung for import duty etc. Keep an eye open in vintage markets and boot fairs as well as charity shops. The Swedish army wool trousers are very good and sometimes available on ebay.

How's about making some trousers from wool blankets ??? Presumably fairly loose is good and you can add the pockets you want where you want them. has anyone doen this?

You forgot loaghtan wool ;) I'm a big fan of picking up wool jumpers in the charity shops the retail price for real wool jumpers is mad compared to there high street counterparts. I defiantly feel that the tighter the weave the better the garment. I've not seen any wool trousers in any main charity shops but i have seen tartan wool trousers in vintage punk shop, a bit eccentric mind you haha.

Wool trousers should be made out of farely tight woven if used as the outer layer. I have yet to see a tight woven wool blanket suitable for wet and windy climate. However, they should be a good choice for a liner.

I have made a pair of trousers from a Merino blanket and they are warm and comfortable even in quite frosty conditions.
If a breeze gets up then I need a windproof layer over them :)

Again, I can only speak of what kind of blankets I have seen and inspected. However, above all the surface of the wool should be smooth to avoid any snow to catch on it. The wool fabric used by the Finnish Defence Forces has a very short nap, around 0.05 mm long.

Endicotts have some nice Danish wool trousers in.
Wayland use a modded pair on our BcUK advanced trip a year ago, to very good effect!.
I have the Swedish military version, fantastic.
Best.

Cat.
