Trangia burner questions

Hi all,

I've acquired several trangias to use with my Scout troop, question is, when the burners are lit should the flame be in one central "column" or should it burn like a gas ring through the small holes around the side ?

Mine seems to work as a combination of both but is this right ?

Yep

but mainly when the burner has nothing over it - when you put a pan over the top the 'gas ring' spreads out. The amount of spread depends on the height of the pan.

As an experiment you can set the burner on its own on a heatproof surface and light it. Once it's warmed up, hold a saucepan of water over it and vary the height while watching from the side to see the effect.
