I want an alternative to the nylon pouch that my sewing kit is in.

What do you all keep you gear in (or dont you bother)

I have a Dutch army issue sewing kit in my possible pouche.
But I am making one as seen in a Ray Mears DVD, that a Sami was carrying. Was made of antler.

When ready, I will post a pic.

Nice one! look forwaed to it

My needles (bone, porcupine quill and modern metal) are in a birch bark pot, which has wooden ends, along with a lttle willow thread and a bobbin of modern thread.
Along with some resin/charcoal/beeswax glue and an "eskimo thimble" and some willowtwine, nettle twine and some palm leaf twine these live in a - wait for it - Welsh Bushcrafters leather pouch!
Good innit!

I ended up with several dead Maglite Solataires and after I cut off the working end and removed the spare bulb and spring from the other end. I then sealed it off with a bit of Miliput to make a watertight tube. I made a 3 section spool to go inside it from some modellers plastcard and a bit of tube. The needles go inside the tube, I've wound cotton and waxed linen thread onto the spools and it does me fine. It's small enough to go on a key ring or as a pull tag on a zip of a wash bag. It gets borrowed a lot.

For longer trips I carry a more elaborate sewing/mending kit in a nylon British army housewife which is as big as I'd like to carry.

It occurs to me that a more traditional version of the small kit I carry could be made from one of the wooden tubes they used to package large drill bits /augers in, a spool come needle case could be turned to fit inside it. I've also seen very large cigars in similar tubes.
