The main fire danger is not the tipi itself but what you put in the tipi.

Smoke can be a big problem in small tipis. Using damp wood can make this worse.

I have not yet been in one, but the smoke problem must be significantly affected by the flow of air both out and in. I guess it will be less smoky if it is drafty.

The direction of the wind is important (unless it has a centre smoke hole) ie the smoke hole should be away from the direction of the wind.

The smoke problem is reduced if you have a liner about 6 feet high. The fire then draws air from the outside between the liner and the outer wall and the smoke tents to stay at this level. You can also run a pipe from outside to the fire.
