WILDLIFE WOOD: TIMBER AND BUSHMEAT

"The alarming loss of tropical forests over the past decades has left only 30% and 50% of the original forest cover in Africa and Latin America, respectively.

In parallel there has been an enormous up-surge in hunting and trapping of animals, especially in West and Central African forests for the bushmeat trade. In many areas this has been intensified by the logging industry, which opens access to new forest areas and brings in timber workers that hunt animals for food and trade, causing problems for both conservation and local people, whose livelihoods depend on hunting.

The protected-area system covers only about 10% of tropical forest and is too small and fragmented to ensure conservation of a wide range of species.

In contrast, timber-production forests cover 30–50% of remaining forests.

Therefore, collaboration with the timber trade provides an important opportunity to facilitate conservation efforts outside protected areas."
