Hi I have 2 old Tilley's 1 X246B and an older X246 from the 50's. I have not had the 246b lit in a couple of years, and don't think it will be a problem. the old one though has not been fired up for 20 or so years, what would be the safest way to check it over? or is it a case of fill, pump and check it holds pressure, if it does proceed as normal.

Also where is the best place to get service kits?

Cheers

The easiest way to test it is to remove the hood and mantle. Empty it of fuel. Then turn off the vapouriser. Next give it 60 or so pumps and drop it into a bucket of water. You will see any leaks from the bubbles that are released, hopefully there will not be any.

Base Camp are very good http://www.base-camp.co.uk/ or eBay.

Most likely you will need to soak the pump leather in oil (3-in-1, motor oil or olive oil is all fine) before it will do anything.

The best recommendation is to get a complete kit of seals from Base Camp or Fettlebox and replace anything that isnt metal. All the rubber parts will be unreliable after this long. Get several mantles and a preheater clip if you dont have one. Getting a Tilley running isnt difficult once you know what they are about so dont hesitate to ask here if you get stuck.
