I'm guessing that I'm not alone with problems identifying some trees. We learn to recognise the various leaf shapes only to get completely stumped by the bark of a leafless tree - whether seasonal or dead. Added to this is that the bark and 'appearance' of a tree can change greatly during its life.

Although it's only my opinion, I consider these two pages to be really good for taking identification right back to the bare bones.

Winter: http://coedlleol.org.uk/Publications/wtreeid.pdf (this page explains the thread title :D )

Summer: http://coedlleol.org.uk/Publications/streeid.pdf

Both of these pages come from this Publications and Resources page of this website: http://coedlleol.org.uk/index.htm

No connection to site etc.
