We have eight lovely hook knives to try:

l-r: Bo Helgesson, 2 x Ben Orford, Del Stubbs, Svante Djarv, 3 x Frosts (middle one is a Robin-modified double edger) and plan to also add a Frosts hoof knife before they start making the rounds.

Rather than trying to manage two threads the passaround rules are up on British Blades here and to participate you need to post a picture of at least one spoon you have made on there!

I have no camera that works, mine has a battery fault, and I have no reasonable spoon anyways, as I have no spoon knife. Does this mean I'm barred?

Not barred, you'll just have to be patient! To start with we'd like to get half a dozen or so reviews from people who have a little spoon carving experience and will be better able to judge the comparative merits of the knives.

It's a whole new technique using these knives and I think it would be too much for someone with no experience of them at all to safely try eight in a week and review them. If the passaround goes smoothly - we don't get messed around, nothing gets lost or damaged etc - we'll look at doing a novices passaround for folk like you.

Sorry, I've been busy, busy, busy so a bit slow updating this thread! So xavierdoc has first go and came this morning to collect the parcel. (He had an exciting ride over on his motorbike in the snow - hope he got home ok!) We'll pass on to the others in order; benp1, gorilla, celt_ginger and stew.

Anyone else fancy having a play?

I got home OK, thanks to Nicola and Robin giving me directions to avoid the high ground! I was actually riding on snow past a crashed Saab at one point!

Once out of the blizzard I took a few snaps, though the sense of atmosphere you get from seeing cloud below you is lost in the photos. Robin and Nicola live in an idyllic part of the peaks; enjoyed my ride despite the weather!

Saw some inspiring work chez Robin and Nicola. Made it clear I have a lot to learn, but it will be fun.

I've sent the knives on to Brancho, today. I'll post my final impressions of these lovely tools in the reviews section, again.

I'm going to miss 'em, (sobs)

Results from the Pole Lathe Turners passaround are here. I also had a go with these with some folk on a course we were running the weekend before. As we teach using the Helgess hook they were familiar with it, but of the rest they too favoured the Svante Djarv or Ben Orford tight curve.
Here's someone's test bit of wood and a spoon they made:

It's frustrating that the Helgess hook is so difficult to get hold of as most folk once they have some experience seem to favour it. However I was really interested to try a larger Svante Djarv hook last weekend that belonged to one of the reviewers and it felt like it could have some potential, although it was rather blunt! I'll follow that one up ...

Nicola
PS I'm hoping to send these out again in the post for someone else to try so there should be more news soon.
