My middle son is very keen on swashbuckling films, so for his birthday I found the DVD of 'The Flashing Blade'.

If you're in your late thirties like me, you'll probably remember this from Saturday morning kids TV. Despite being appalingly badly dubbed, with an incomprehensible plot, it was definitely one of the better things on TV.

Anyone remember it? Some info here: http://www.thechestnut.com/flashing.htm

I remember it! absolutely classic TV, still don't have a clue what it was all about :) .

Happy memories.... I take it you recall Robinson Crusoe as well? How about Rob as a survival/bushcraft icon? I recall the original book had a fair bit of detail.

Ah, the theme tune...da dum, dum dum dum, da dum.....great stuff. Mind you, I could never understand why the Chevalier de Recci was chasing after the blonde comtesse when the brunette from the travelling players was about fifteen times foxier...17th century social class issue I suspect.

'The Princess Bride' thanks for the hint. I vaguely remember seeing it at the flicks and it was a great swashbuckler. You cannot beat a good swashbuckler.

Dude, maybe you should post pics of the 'comely maids'?

Matt.

EDIT - or not :o really shouldn't post after a few ales :11doh:

Get The Vikings on DVD, that was always my favourite. Then get him into the Chinese stuff like House of Flying Daggers (best film ever, and it's got Zhang Ziyi in it) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (also got Zhang Ziyi in it...) Then got some old Kurosawa stuff like Seven Samurai (not got Zhang Ziyi in it, but not bad though) and Yojimbo/Sanjuro and all the other Mifune stuff. Loads of swordplay and the old black and white Kurosawas have my ex grandfather in law in it as various mounted samurai, and the colour one (Kagemusha) has my ex father in law doing the same. Top stuff...

Doc, I don't think that I watched that, it sounds good though... I used to love the old films like the green night and the like...

I remember the banana bunch, Zorro, blakes7 etc

Saturday morning pictures in Exmouth cinema (sadly now demolished) Zorro, Casey jones (steamin' an a rollin') Tarzan, Lassie, The 3 stooges, Daktari, Laurel and Hardy (which I still absolutely love, they still make me laugh) Bonanza, and various swash bucklers which I can't remember the names of now.
My mates mum worked at the cinema so we used to get in for free. Not sure what she did exactly, but we were allowed to stay behind after everyone else got kicked out, and we used to scour the floor for money that had fallen out of peoples pockets when they were sitting down from the friday night before. We usually got a few bob and then straight down the sweet shop (skinner's) to cash in our haul, grab fishing gear and down to the pier to catch pollack and garfish and stuff our faces with our sweets, Curly wurly was one of my favourites. Crikey havn't they been around for a long time, I don't eat sweets at all now, do they still do them?...................great memories and boy does that seem like a very long time ago

Doc you are beginning to make me feel dated, yep I remeber it .

Well if the lad is into all of that kind of thing, good on him. Other good ones on the list of swashbuclers (these are all film).

The Crimson Pirate (Burt Lancaster)
The Man In The Iron Mask (New version is pretty good with an all star cast including Malcovich).
The Prisoner of Zenda (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.)
The Sea Hawk (Errol Flynn)
Captain Blood (Errol Flynn)
The Court Jester (Danny Kaye).
The fighting O'Flynn (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.)

There are many others to look out for, all you have to do is search for some of the old stars and look at thier lists of films, another actor that you could look out for is Basil Rathbone though he mainly did the old Sherlock Holmes films he did the odd swashy:D

This charming film has just come on 'five life' (#36). For anyone who's not seen it Peter
Falk (Columbo) tells his grandson (kid from the Wonder Years) the story of the Princess
Bride.

Aimed at kids, but secretly at adults :D

And I didn't even have to start a new thread.

Is it not well liked because the protagonists use their blades incorrectly, or something like
that? And they never seem to sharpen them of course ;)

Or are they in fact mad keen on the film?

First time I saw 'the Princess Bride' was at the QM at Glasgow Uni. I think it was shown at least once a month. (But thats Students for you:rolleyes: )

I used to love the Flashing Blade, Zoro.. I'm sure there were others and then ofcourse Monkey, what was that all about?:D

A few of them are obsessed by it! There has been many a thread discussing the merits of the film, and quotes of the dialogue are often thrown around left right and centre.
Do a search on BB for the words inigo montoya if you like and you'll see what I mean ;)
