I have the Exteme smock,
Its great, but I find I can only wear it during the coldest of weather - much else and its way too hot!

Both good jackets Pang, it just comes down to price at the end of the day.

The choice of walking/general oudoor jackets is endless, is there any reason you`ve particularly gone for Montane gear ??

Both are good but neither are fire friendly of course. What do you intend using your new jacket for ???

I have a couple of Buffalo Spec 6 shirts which are awesome for anything apart from where fire is involved.

If I'm using open fires and its wet, so therefore need a waterproof, I just revert back to wearing a cotton jacket or shirt over the top of the synthetic coat. We used to do this to keep warm and dry but also quiet. It also works well as a protection against melt hazard although after a good soaking your over jacket weighs a bloody ton!

As far as which one-sorry I haven't looked but would have to recommend the lighter weight one,if there is one!, in order to fit in with the fire safety overcoat idea:D

For the best "using" jacket for the "cheapest" price, it's hard to beat that army surplus fatigue jacket with zip-in liner. Simple, basic, tough, generally warm, usually cotton, and lots of pockets. And with the low cost, you aren't afraid to really use it hard.

The army keeps using it because it works! And some people even consider it ... stylish!

Stick with the basic OD instead of the camo patterns. Any camo color stands out when seen in public - and attaches lots of preconceived notions/ideas/images - some good, some bad.

Yes, some modern outdoors jackets/coats can do better, but the price ramps up dramatically on them.

Just my humble thoughts to share. Take them as such.

Is it just me or does anybody else find it strange that a thread named The best jacket actually only comes down to two?

I wouldn't buy any of them anyway, if that helps.

The Best Jacket.....

........is the one.......

........YOU like, YOU can afford, and YOU feel comfortable in!

That's the bottom line.
