Anyone heard about the huge solar flares due to hit earth this september?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1313858/Solar-flare-paralyse-Earth-2013.html

In the USA FEMA are buying up food supplies from survivalist stores and the norweigens have a huge seed bank in the artic presumably for after the flares.

anyone else worried? its not like its some religious apocalyptic prediction, seems founded in science.

well if **** gys rally at mine ? plenty of good hunting and foraging here and i have good contacts that are useful.

Wy not look at these sites instead of the Daily Wail et al ...

There's no scientific argument about "if" there will be flares that can cause big damage (although much less than is commonly thought - info from my IEEE Hubby and friends) there will be such flares. The only discussions are on "when". I doubt solar flares (despite novels) will cause sufficient problems to make me gallop down to learn from you, Fish, but I'll be down soon for some more lessons soon anyway, flares or no flares :D

The Daily Mail article was written in 2010 and is simply referring (in the usual sensationalist DM fashion) to the fact that the cycle of solar activity is due to peak around about now. As the article above states this particular solar cycle has turned out to have very little activity compared to other recent ones so the chances of a severely damaging solar event are probably less now than they were in the early 2000s (when we already had pretty heavy reliance on power grids, the Internet and satellite navigation).

Also I believe the seed bank is located the Arctic for the simple reason that it's really cheap to keep stuff cold there. It certainly wouldn't be a good place if you were worried about solar events as the effect is strongest around the poles due to the shape of the Earth's magnetic field, hence why auroras are only seen at higher latitudes.

Solar Maxim happens every 11 years Justin.

There is always a chance a flare could be big and powerful enough to have effects here on earth, its unlikely though.

What I don't understand is why they still wear nappies under their jeans (and apparently full ones)

Guys we need to talk about this type of thing seriously. I could have dire effects for how we live, survive, exist even.

Then again Peter Capaldi is the new Dr Who, he'll save us!

Well, being serious . . . It could stuff up GPS navigation. Time to dig the sextant out of the box. Maybe I'd better learn to use it first.
