Tanning squirrel (or other small game) hides.

From a purely academic point of view, how would I go about tanning squirrel hides?

Tomtom mentioned a while ago, that be believed that every mammal has enough brain tissue to tan its own hide.

This thread mentions using oak tannin.

But how could I tan the hide, make it rain resistant, and keep the fur on?

I have my doubts about a giraffe's brain being big enough, too... But I can believe that in would work for most mammals.

I'm most concerned about keeping the fur firmly on the hide, and giving some degree of resistance to rain.
