tang hole

knife making kit from heinnie haynes. i understand all the basic principles, but having never made 1 before, i wondered how do u but the hole through the birch block for the tang to slide in? cheers dan

Quite a while ago i made up a damasteel stick tang and found that a very long thin drill bit and some files will do. If you have access to a pilar drill then even better. Then after the hole is made go at it with needle files. The kit looks like it has a bolster so if you go a little overboard with the hole it will be hidden anyways. Once you have a snug fit stuff it with a good epoxy before you fit it. Make sure you well wrap the blade to stop it scratching or lopping part of your finger off

One last thing go slow with it, if something looks like its going a little pear shaped then gleave ti alone and go back to it the next day with a fresh pair of eyes

My advice is go to british blades and look for a tutorial there are a few I would put up a link but I cannot get on from work.

Other things to bear in mind are the tang can/should be thinned to be narrower than where the blade enters the handle/bolster.
You can shorten the tang if your hole cannot be deeper than the tang lengh.
You can buy extra long drill bits but they cost a bit extra mine cost about £2.50 each and they are easy to snap
