On my recent bowl carving course we tried this little Svante Djatve adze alongside the Gransfors and Karlsson.
My personal feeling is the Karlsson is the best of the bunch. The Svante Djarve works but it would be much slower carving a decent bowl, great for taking the bowl out of a big spoon or carving little bowls though and £30 cheaper than the Karlsson.

out of interest whats the 5 or 6cm dim refer to the diameter of the cuttng curve or the edge lenght ???
alos guessing a bit of weight is a good thing

I have not tried one of Bens hammer adze yet though I like most of his tools. The short length and light weight look pretty similar to the Svante Djarve to me and at £30 more I would find it hard to justify, only £10 less than a Karlsson. Ben forges by hand and I think to be competitive with adzes and axes you really need a power hammer.

5 or 6 refers to the width of the cutting edge. The 5cm is a segment of a circle the 6cm has a flatter section in the middle. 5 is better for spoons and kuksas 6 is better for bowls.

I had a feeling you might reccommend the Karlsson. Maybe I'll have to save up for a bit longer.

Robin, what would you want in the ideal small adze for carving bowls and the like?

I'm thinking head weight, length of blade (edge to eye), cutting edge length, radius of curve, angle of edge to the back of the head (ie the top of the adze isn't straight and at 90 to the handle), handle length, etc.

I've been thinking about making some up for ages, but not had the chance to play. Like you say, to be really competitive with things like that you need a power hammer; but I'm sure some people would be happy to buy tools made well and made here. Let's face it, I don't think anybody making them by hand would want to make lots of them anyway
