I need a lightweight bag to use as hand luggage on a forthcoming flight, can you think of something more suitable than a Tesco Bag for Life carrier bag? The bag must be lightweight as I will be carrying it on a rucksack for a week. I need to take the max allocation of hand luggage as I will have to pack snowshoes, snow shovel and kip mat inside my rucksack for the flight, once at the destination the snowshoes etc can be attached to the outside of the sack and the contents of the hand luggage bag can then be placed in the main rucksack.

So is there anything more suitable than a carrier bag?

The Alpkit Gourdon might work. Robust, fairly cheap, hand-luggage size and, especially if you remove the padded insert, can be rolled up and packed away.

Wear as much clothing as you possibly can through check-in - and stuff your pockets with stuff too. Peal off the excess layers as soon as you are checked in :)
A smock with big pockets can hold a mass of kit. A stuff sack with the draw cords attached to the base (like an old duffel bag or boot bag) or a compression bag is reasonably comfortable to carry and weighs very little and can be useful after you get off the plane.
My Assistant Leader wore his favourite Buoyancy Aid onto a plane when we were leading a Raleigh Int Exped on the lake in Ghana and was not challenged. It freed up a lot of room in his luggage. I put up with the issued BA....

I use a lightweight rucksac from Decatholon, folds to about the size of an orange, used it on the flight as carry on and then as a light rucksac around the location etc.

I have a linen shoulder bag which I often use, they are readily available over here, not so sure about the UK though. I like the fact that I can hang it over my shoulder and keep my hands free. It is about the size of a medium laptop bag.

Similar in appearance to this one from Amazon UK, just a little bigger.

I use one of these too. It lives in a pocket and most often gets used for shopping. It is the same idea as an ONYA bag (always got it on you). Just remebered I have a spare. If its any good to you, PM me and I'll send it to you.

Just seen this, I've got a lightweight 1980's Swedish army rucksack that I use for this very purpose. It was £9.99 from Military mart I think.
Certainly comes recommended from me!!

Many carriers are cracking down on cabin bag sizes. The only issue I'd foresee with a 60lt stuff sack is that the shape of the sack could cause some problems for some departure gate staff testing the cabin bag in the size apparatus; the cabin bag must fit in when dropped in, and shouldn't require stuffing and or other encouragement.

A jacket with big and cavernous pockets, a hand held sweater, or two, and a max sized "approved" cabin bag. Very much depends who you're flying with and which way your headed. Outward from the UK is where I see most of the problems.

Worst case scenario is they put your rejected cabin bag in the hold, and charge you for the privilege, ryanair easyjet wizzair air-baltic, city jet (they won't charge but often put the larger hand baggage routinely into the hold as the aircraft they operate lacks cabin stowage). So be sure not to have valuables and or damagables (laptops camera equipment tablets etc) in a dodgy carry on bag least it's taken off you placed in the hold and the next time you see it is when you have to pick it up from the baggage hall.

Items damaged in this way aren't covered by many travel policies as depending how it was done the item may not have been, technically, checked in. An insurance loophole worth avoiding.
