Evening all
thought i would share with you that the first scout meeting i attended as a leader went very well :)
a brief list of ten things they wanted to learn this year brought some good ideas i can help them learn/achieve (not counting assassination little concerned by that one)
then i taught them a basic search line which was tested in the scout hut field before a brief session with the spark sticks and cotton wool went down a storm.
the really good part was it was my old scout troop in my old scout hut!
Sam

Nice one, glad that went smoothly. Assassination is a main subject not on the school curriculum. It seems to be a home learning thing now....

I might be after some tips - I'm looking set to graduate from assistant Cub Scout Leader to main Scout leader in November. Rather scary!

Would be good to hear of your progress and what you get up to with your troop. I recently became a Joey Scout leader (1st Caringbah. www.1stcaringbahscouts.com ) with my 6 year old son, and we're having a great time. I was a scout (21st Medway) many moons ago and have a strong belief in the benefits of the movement. With three sons, I am hoping we will all be involved at some point.

congrats mate!

It's nearly reassuring to know that that is the plan! I think some of the cubs things I've done (we're cooking on a fire this week, weather permitting) are transferable. I've done Cubs for a couple of years (and Beavers for a bit) so I'm hoping older boys will actually be easier!

Sam well done and teaching them something useful already :35:

As for becoming Scout Leader well as has been said just make out like you what you are doing:rolleyes:

But really my main peice of advice always test out activities before doing it with the kids and you dont have to be there for them to join in thats why you have assitants.

One more thing is that if you are teaching Scouts (cubs or Beavers) how to use knives I beleive that the Group/Troop should buy suitable knives so at least you know that they are sharp and in good condition.

You wouldnt ask them to bring an axe would you.
Axes do not need to be as sharp as a knife for Scouts either a bow saw should be used for anything thicker than the wrist and axes do not need to be razor sharp to split wood.

Welcome back to the World Brotherhood of Scouting! Great fun! I'm sure y'all have something similar to our "Woods Wisdom" which is our outdoor program planning resource. It is available for download online for free. It has lots and lots of outdoor program planning features that I am sure you could adapt to fit your needs.

Yours in Scouting,

Gordy
