Socks for hot environments

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
This one I'm stuck on. Wool is far too hot for me. But on the other hand, cotton just doesn't protect as well from blisters unless you change socks 2 or 3 times a day. And synthetics just plain suck. Doing without socks is a good way to get athletes foot (trench foot)

In other words, I'm still waiting for somebody to invent something that really works.

And as others have said, I really don't walk that far any more.

My feet tend to overheat in pretty much anything. However, I did buy a pair of Bridgedale Trailhead socks last weekend and they were pretty damn good. I hiked 19 miles (9.5 each way), but it was rather hot, plus I was carrying a hefty pack across country.

I should point out that it was the first time I'd put Friar's Balsam on my balls/heel before starting the walk, so it might be something to do with that as well :/

****EDIT****

Apparently, I should clarify that I mean the balls of my feet.........

Merino wool socks for me, too. Since I discovered them I haven't worn anything else and replaced all my other socks. I even have merino sneaker socks for summer. My feet feel always comfortable.

Yes but you're talking about a European Summer. The OP specifically said he's going to a hot climate. We must assume he means somewhere that truly is hot.

I wore them in temperatures above 30° C with no problems. This summer we had some really hot days in Germany, up to 38° C. Last friday it was 33° C here. If that's not hot enough I can't say anything about it. If I wear socks I wear merino wool. If not I go barefoot (which isn't an option in really hot weather because it burns the sole of your feet...)!

For Summer weather, 30c (86f) is a cool day (or a normal night)

38c (100.4f) is hot here. But even that is fairly cool in a truly hot climate; The norm in the Nevada desert was over 110f (43.3c) in Summer. I've actually arrived at Las Vegas when it was warmer than that at midnight.

It would help if the OP specified where he was going.
