The new radios have a thing called DSC Digital selective calling , it is connected to a gps so when you press the red distress button it sends your position to the
coastgaurd . to register the new radio you need the new operators licence and have to give lots of details about the boat . i also have a handheld dsc vhf that requires
it's own portable licence ,we also have a satellite emergency beacon that we can activate should the worse happen and we sink , it needs a separate registration .
but we are nearly there , only a couple still to sort out .
