Snow, YAY!!

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I had a great weekend in the snow. Three of us went to a friends cottage (no electric or running water) in the Mourne Mountains, access by Land Rover, got up early on Saturday and spent the day ice climbing on the Black Stairs, a frozen waterfall. Superb.

We had a great time in Wales over the weekend too ... once Kathie has had a chance to sort out the pics we'll post more details!
Needless to say ... snow was involved!!!

I spent a great day and night camping up the Cavehill Saturday. Fantastic views through the trees over the twinkling, sprawling city below, a perfectly clear starry night, snow all around, a great fire and hipflask. Was a near perfect wee trip and all on my doorstep! Never spent the night up there before but I reckon this was the first of many trips.

lol,cavehill. are you mad???the last time i was up there my dad tried to take us across a ledge and we nearly fell to our deaths...i was 13.many moons ago.im looking for a good venue to take my son .got a pair of bivvy bags last week and he is busting to go.its hard finding a spot where you can light a fire.i,d never of thought of cavehill.i live in lurgan now but was in the city for 22 yrs.

:o)::lol:

Hi naughty boy, guess I might be mad!! A lot of people kind of look at me funny when i tell them where I've been but in all honesty its a fantastic spot. Totally underappreciated by a lot of folk as it just looms over the city all the time. I like it that way though! If you are gonna go up there I can recommend a couple of great spots in the woods. I have the odd illicit fire but usually wait til after dark to get it going when most of the sane people and 'spides' have gone home. I stayed pretty much just at the top of the tree line too so hopefully no danger of being spotted. I also practice a leave no trace policy as far as possible when lighting fires.

Was the ledge on the way up to the higher caves? People have died trying to scramble up to them, I've never tried mself and don't think I ever will!! Did you know there is a movie being released about an WWII American bomber that crashed into the hill? Should be interesting to see the Cavey in a Hollywood production!

Anyway good to see another N. Irish bushcrafter on here.... we're growing in numbers! :biggthump

well thanks dude,i would like to know these spots as im keen to take my son up and get him away from the playstation.id thought of castlewellan forest but there is a no fire policy there.good man for going up the hill,im impressed.i can imagine the view at night.what did you sleep in ?did i read a hammock? never tried that.i was thinking of just my thermarest and bivvy bag set up,with a small tarp over us.is it v secluded ?i wouldnt want the carry-out club making an appearance.
