Hello all.

Having had agreat time but sadly having to bug out early from the winter moot (my new titianium hips couldnt take it) I am upgrading kit and sleeping mats. Before I start, I have never got on well with a hammock so that suggestion is out. I was sleeping with a German sniper mat as a base then 2 heat reflective 10mm cosed cell matts on top of that. This setup was a radical departure for me as I used to only use a sniper mat and a heat reflector, so I had kind off thought it through. The new hips were still not comfortable, okay on my back.

What I am looking for is a 50mm mat, inflatable. One that can actually be back packed in rather than 'glamped' in a car. Preferably one that packs down small. Any ideas chaps?

Sandsnakes.

Go thick or go home! Is there a reason for your 50mm thickness limitation other than suspected pack size, such as being limited by the vertical side portions of your tent?

Oh that's such a shame for you. I mostly hammock camp as I find that far more comfortable than on the ground. I could only do one or two nights on the ground, but have managed 5 days with the treckology 80 mat. I put the robens zig zag under that and if needed a large reflective car windscreen cover between the two.
Cheap and cheerful, plus very comfortable to my hips. I have bought some more expensive mats and non were as comfy as this set up...so far. I was always rolling off other mats, but seem to stay put on this extremely well. I think it was because I was not comfy on the other mats so I moved around a lot more, which meant I rolled off them, broken sleep and aware if I moved I might roll off which kept me awake and stiff from trying not to move. I sleep like a baby on the treckology mat. No worries about falling off as it's a bit wider than your average mat, and has slightly raised sides, it's as comfy as a tesco air bed. Packs down to very small size , and is very light.
I was sceptical when I got it, as I'd had so many failures, but its my mat of choice now, no question.

Looking at the Alpakit Dumo. Anyone tried this mat? https://alpkit.com/products/dumo?variant=40689877123177
I have two titanium hips and am glad to see you doubling your original spec for thickness. Inflating mats don’t have much inside in the way of padding and unless pumped fairly hard will have a low spot at the hips.

I’m still using a 9 year old Exped Synmat 9, with a very slow inbuilt hand pump. But it gets the job done and the thing is a godsend once inflated.

I have a mini handheld fan with a nozzle for blowing crumbs out of keypads etc that blows it up in no time. They’re not too expensive if you do a lot of camping as a 10cm mat is going to need a lot of air. There are also bags you can get with nozzles to inflate, I forget the name of them.

I have an exped megamat 10 and have just designed a 3dprinted adaptor that plugs into the valve and screws onto the end of this mini jet blower. It makes inflation (excuse the pun) an absolute breeze.

How thick is it when inflated?

I’m not sure the Synmat 9 is still made, but it was expensive way back in 2016. If money isn’t an object then I’d look at Thermarest and Exped mats. Prepare to be shocked, but also prepare to be very comfortable and to get many years of use. A puncture in an inflatable = a miserable night, unlike the self inflating which at least offer a little bit of padding. These are the Synmat range, the bag to inflate them is an accessory.

Mine here, very packable as this is the Long Wide version.

Exped down mat. Mine's the XL....it was a part of a group buy so that was the option given.....and it's a bit long for me at 5'2" but it packs into a normal tent inner just fine.
It was a game changer. I had suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for years, and the difference in this mat from every other one was night and day.
It's not just firmly soft beneath me, but it's actually warm too. The down filled air warms up with your body heat and it makes a difference, it really does.

Not cheap; perhaps see if you could borrow one ? and even just try it for a night sleeping on the floor at home ?

Weight wise, it must be about the same as a bag of sugar, and it packs down to the size of a bag of flour.

Worth every penny :D
