I've recently got myself a small axe/hand axe, aswell as an alright knife; Mora Clipper.

I have a little experience with using the knife for carving etc, but was wondering if you lads/lasses could recommend me a few simple but useful camp gadget projects which will put my axe and knife skills to the test.

I was thinking about a breadboard, but I havent really seen one on this forum, so gathered they arent very popular or useful.

Thankyou in advance.

The things i make more than anything when out in the woods are chopping boards and spatulas. More often than not they only make it to the last day and then get popped in the fire as i am too lazy to clean them :)

I think a chopping board and a spatula are good places to start learning.

Best of luck! And watch your fingers. Get a good stump to work on.

i think the reason that bread boards aren't more popular is that a lot of us simply don't have access to materials of that size, but they are really useful things to have and good projects to work on, it's not often you get the chance to create such wide flat surfaces as you do with a bread board so they're a good way to practice technique.

as for projects to test your skills, traps are great for that, especially things like big deadfalls where everything ends up subject to some fairly considerable forces. just remember to take them down when you're done so as not to hurt anyone or anything :)

cheers

I know its not for camp use, but how about a paddle for a canoe?
I made one form an old scafolding board once, a bit of sawing, and some axe work (fair bit actually)
