I've had a play with one and they seem to do what it says on the box ... at over a £100 they are too pricey for me tho for what they do ... I rarely need to know the windspeed with that level of accuracy that often!

I have just found a site on the net that will provide one of the new ones for £100 dead, they are also barometers and temperature gauges with the ability to put a barometric trend chart, they can calculate windchill and they have a built in altimeter.

Not much use to most people, but I have done a bit of snow and ice climbing and I also used to shoot @ extreme ranges, where wind speed would make quite a difference to your fall of shot.

Apart from that they could be used to predict sudden weather changes using the barometer.

This is why I raised the subject.

Yes, for climbers and sailors and so forth, they are a good bit of kit. I worry about how long it would take dirt and link to bung up the fan though. However, I only held one for a little while and it seemed to do what it said on the box!

Thanks Adi, I know someone who is an amatuer meteorologist and he is pretty good at predicting the weather (well better than the weather men). He says that a barometer is probably the most important thing for local weather prediction.

I have one of these, I use it to measure windspeed at potential windfarm sites when doing bird surveys etc. Everything seems to be very accurate, the impellers are inside a ball that can be swivelled shut to protect them. Altitude and barometer work well when compared to os maps and local weather stations. I'm considering upgrading to the new 'weatherman'

Thanks familne, I had a look @ the silva site earlier, had a good look about for the ADC models and decided that they are just out of my price range after searching half the web, that's one of the reasons for asking about this particular model.

You said that you have one and are thinking of upgrading, is there any particular reason or is it that there are just more functions on the newer models?

many thanks for the link it is quite informative.

There's no particular reason for upgrading apart from new toy syndrome! I've always been interested in weather though - love a good thunderstorm :-D
