Showing me logged in as other people

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
From last night: Saturday 20th Sept 2025, 20:38 to 21:04

I'm being shown as either not signed in on the main page. (https://bushcraftuk.com/community)
Signed in as TeeDee on the main page. (https://bushcraftuk.com/community)
Signed in as Kepis on the main page. (https://bushcraftuk.com/community)

But I am correctly signed in on the "What's new" page. (https://bushcraftuk.com/community/whats-new/)
And when browsing every other page. (I've been grabbing screen shots or screen casts)

I'm getting odd warnings about the active user has been changed, and I should reload the page to continue.

Nothing too special or out of hand needing private conversations. I too could see the count of notifications but couldn't access them.

Using the old trusty inter web on PC.

Many years ago on another forum there used to be a trick with personal messages.
It was the kind of forum where there was a lot of windup merchants and silly tricks going all the time. I'd seen this trick done by someone else and after a few beers one night did it, not really expecting a bit as it had been done to death on that forum already.

For instance, say I was logged into my own personal messages and copied the webb address of my own PM's into a post and someone else clicked on it, they would be taken to their own personal messages.
No problem, everyone got linked to their own PM's.

However, just supposing I'd also said said something like I had hacked into someone elses messages and it sure was funny, providing a hyperlink to them.
Human nature being what it is people clicked on it and got taken to their own PM's but they assumed that it was accessible to everyone else (it wasnt, everyone who clicked the link got taken to their own personal messages) and everyone else could see their little secrets. This was a motorcycle forum by the way and most of my PM's were about obscure technical details of ancient 500cc twostrokes but I did the trick on a thread and someone was being a bit naughty with one of the females on there.
I honestly never saw who the female was but the male properly spat the dummy, I got home from work to a fair heap of personal messages and what he wasnt going to do to me wasn't worth doing, then a later one where he'd realised it was just a windup was far more sheepish.
Can't remember who it was and I've no idea if it would work on this forum. I'm no hacker, just a bloke who brays nails in and can understand a tiny bit of HTML.

To be honest, I've never done that one again and felt like I'd gone a bit far with it, the poor bloke was pretty cheesed off even though he was ok by the end of it.

<whistles innocently>

The difficulty is that if you DID ever deliberately access someone else’s DMs or login/cause mischief with someone else’s account without their consent, even via a bug on a forum, you’d actually be committing a criminal offence under the Computer Misuse Act. It’s not an offence that a lot of people are aware of, but due to the nature of the internet where everything is logged and traceable, it’s quite easy for the police to evidence.

Of course in your case you did not actually access someone’s account, so not an issue. Just posting as an aside for anyone who likes geeky info.

Aye, I can see that could be a problem. Ahem.
I'd been caught out by someone else doing that trick but fortunately had worked it out before offering them out or sending death threats.
Mind, as my PM's were significantly less spicy (I'm assuming anyway) than his I was maybe a bit more level headed about it.
Its easy to stay calm when all you think people could see is specifications of big old motocrossers.

I also frequently get active user had been changed, some pages show me as signed out, some as signed in.
I think I reported this just after the last upgrade if I remember correctly. Still happening.
Seems to sort itself if I come off the forum and then back on without signing out. Very annoying.
I havnt noticed if I'm shown as someone else. But it seems that this problem isn't going away. Not being tech minded I've no idea what is going on. But its realy annoying.

Thanks for the update woodygirl, I'm fairly sure that the two issues are unrelated, you shouldn't be signed in as someone else and we've not been able to track down the random being logged in/logged out issue, which seems to be a cache issue.

Happened for the first time to me, looks like only my name is wrong everything else seems to work correctly.

This is still happening. The font is smaller when it does, back to lager when I come off the forum without signing out and when I come back again it back to normal size. Also not receiving notifications any more from bcuk, but still getting them from other sources. Have cleared cache as suggested. There is definatly something going on.

This happened yesterday for the first time to me - today is fine. Caused a security error message if I selected private messages, showed the correct user logged in when I tried to edit my posts. So seemed to be affecting only the main page.
