I've been looking at the antique thumbhole Disston rip saws on Ebay for a while.

Primary purpose would be for having a go at ripping planks out of logs. [Have any of you done this? Proenekke makes it look easy!]

What do you look for when buying a saw? They seem to come in all manner of different shapes and sizes.

Just wondered if there is a specific length you should choose, condition, when are the teeth too worn down, as to be unfileable, twanginess [technical term] type of teeth, how many teeth per inch do you want, why do some narrow more toward the tip than others, why do some have more blade on the bottom under the handle, which is the best triangular file to get, etc etc.

They seem to go for under £20, so worth adding to my list of tools for when i get around to moving to Twin Lakes.
