Sea fishing

Well yesterday i decided that i wanted to go fishing on saturday i have all the gear (i think). i have fished before but have always just casted out and hoped for the best, i also havent targeted a certain species of fish, i will be using lures when fishing tommorow as i havent had time to get bait. got any tips on rigs, fish to target, anything really
i am going to be either cycling or walking so i want to travel fairly light
PS: I will be fishing in the estuary. there is a pier i can fish off or i could just shore fish

If I was you I would put on a three way swivel with one for your main line, the lower one for your weight and a leader of about a meter or so long for your spinner or jelly worm. Fish from the peir either side of high tide for mackies and let your lure sink down pretty far before spinning it in.

Good luck mate!

Over here, Sea Fishing is the only fishing I do.
Personally I go for Bass and Mackerel from off the rocks.
I have more luck with Mackerel and just get them using feathers.
Does involve a lost of casting, then reeling in, jigging a bit... but keeps me occupied
2 hours before until 2 hours after high tide, seem to be the best time to catch them here.

I usually go light too, since we take our fishing gear when we're out hammocking.
I've done away with a tackle box, just stuff a small bag with some weights, and about 4 sets of feathers in a side pocket then off we go.... fishing rod makes an excellent hiking stick too

thanks, i will make up one of them rigs today so it seems the best time to fish is 2 hours before high tide untill two hours after high tide ????
i think i will go for mackeral and bass, now you two have gven me advice on mackeral, but what about bass ?
do you know the size they have to be if i want to keep them ?
if i set all my lures out and take a picture, would you be able to tell me what ones look most promising ?

Well that's what seems to work well over here, low tide there isn't much about and they seem to come in with the tide over here ( but we have got one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world here apparently).
Over here, there doesn't seem to be a minimal size limit for sea fishing, unlike with fresh water, but obviously use common sense and don't take anything that is too small.
I'd check with the area you're fishing though.

EDIT:
The top left one on the feathers are the ones i use for mackerel over here, also the other ones, but use the white versions.
I also, use the ones with the small luminescent ball on them , work out quite well.

thanks, i have an 11ft telescopic rod but i guess this is far to long for pier fishing i have tons of other smaller rods but they are freshwater i think
what is a good size rod for pier fishing ?

Personally, I think it's far too long for Mackerel fishing from the rocks, but it's what a lot of guys use over here to great success... so who am I to comment.
It casts out great (obviously) and can really handle a load if you hit a decent school. With Mackerel you usually get more than 1 on the same line.

Most of my friends use a smaller rod, around 10ft with lighter gear so they get more feeling from the rod. They have great success with that setup too, especially this year!

i might go for a little fish today, high tide is at 16.50 so about 3 o'clock would be a good time to fish ?
i will test out my feathers
the thing is the pier is only small and you are only aloud half way along it

depends on the rod really mate, have a try and see what feels best,
a 3oz should be enough tho, perhaps lighter if your rod has a lot of play.

i think my fishing rod is fairly stiff so a 3oz sounds about right
do i just attach it to the bottom of the feathers ?

Yeah, just a swivel at the top on your line, then attach to top loop on feathers, and then on the bottom of the feathers put the loop through your weight, then done

well the lightest weight i could find was 5oz so i think i will take them along just incase but i will go to the chandlery and buy a 3oz one

well i went the chandlery didnt sell any fish weights so i just used my 5oz ones, i tryed for mackeral with the feathers and bass using a small fish lure and also a worm lure
to cut it short i caught nothing and didnt even get a bite lmao

Well how was the fishing trip leon? If you are going out again try spinning with eddystone or redgill artificial eels for pollack in rocky bays and inlets. They give a great fight and are much better eating than cod or haddock (in my opinion and all my friends who have tried them) you may also be lucky to hit into a nice bass. I have been fishing since i was 5 mostly fly but for xtra sport sea i wouldnt consider myself an expert but i have learned from a lot of mistakes so if youwant any advice im more than happy to help.
