Sas,para,gs and marine bergens

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I once did a 35Km tab along the Norfolk coast with 60 pounds in a Vulcan. At the end of it I had hot/bruised feet (thanks to my Boots, Combat, High).
The guys with issue PLCE bergans were in considerable pain. A lot of them were coming in over the finish line bent over double. This was as a result of having the whole weight being carried on their shoulders.

A good waist belt makes a massive difference.

CLEM,
The Vulcan will take the PLCE bergen side pouch so you can use them like a day sack. I use the PLCE at work and don't really like them, the shoulder straps seem to cut in a bit and the waist belt isn't much use as it doesn't take any weight off the shoulders, the internal frame breaks too easy and makes it useless. I used to use a sas/para bergen but my lower back didn't like it. I use a Vulcan for everything else, like it a lot, not allowed to use it for work as it's green. If you can pick one up cheap I would recommend it. Hope this helps mate.
