Sami Salt Bottle's? Calling all scandi obbsesives!!

I was admiring some of the museum photo's on one of Waylands threads, and I fancy having a go at making a sami inspired salt bottle... I have seen them for sale for silly money (made from birch with a curly birch inlay). And as I just been lucky enough to get some seasoned length's of Birch, I thought I would have a try!
Problem is... I can't work out if they are simply drilled out from the bottom, Or are they cut in two then hollowed out??
I cant believe the one in waylands photo has been made using a machine drill!
I know it's a long shot, but I'm hoping maybe some of our Scandinavian guy's may have handled/or own one!
If they are spliced in two, then hollowed.. How the hell did they do it with only simple hand tools back in the day??
Any help appreciated!!

to drill out the centre use a bow drill, if you split it glue it back with hide glue, and wipp it up with natural cordage, thats how i would do it old styleeee......:)

hope that helps a little...
