Thanks for the replies so far. I'm feeling a lot better about having been confused now. I think we have been given the definitive answer from the RN, but I'd still like a definitive answer from an ex RM.

Another question. I know the origin of the terms leatherneck and bootneck, but are they perjorative or not? What your RM friends may find acceptable in the pub may not be the same as RMs you don't know and I'd hate to put my foot in it- or have the boot put in- by getting it wrong!

Bootnecks is used as an affectionate ribbing term by the RN, but calling them Booties won't be looked upon as an insult.

Palm forward like the pongo's; bootneck is excepted no dramas; when talking to a fellow, we affectionately term each other 'Royal'- "alright royal, redders today mate". Obviously, if you're not or never Royal, you can't call your oppo Royal ;)
