right size for bushcraft knife?

is a piece of 4X30X250mm tool steel the right size for a bushcraft knife? its the height of the steel that concerns me because i want to make quite a deep knife, like a woodlore but with a thumb ramp if i can manage. my mora is only 20mm tall but it is a bit on the short side...

whatever works for you is the right size, their is no wrong or right way a bushcraft knife can be. aslong as its used for bushcraft, its a bushcraft knife, whetherlabled so or not.

HI my woody version with a small thumb ramp needs 35mm but have to get 40mm as they don't do 35mm

draw out and try some cardboard shapes and see what fits

The steel will be fine, its what you do with it Jordan that is important, especially the heat treatment.

First knives can be disappointing but keep going and by the second or third one you should be nearly there, that's what I have found anyway. Its good fun, and a great hobby.

I find the handle is too short on many knives, so now I make my own, but I add just under an inch to the length of the handle of a standard Woody. Fits perfectly then.

I only use 30mm wide steel, That will be plenty deep enough for a blade you will get from that length. Not far from a fallkniven F1 in fact, which do have a deep blade.

That piece will give a good 5" bladed knife with a good sized handle if you had a mind to go that big. Typical bushy knives tend to have a blade length between 3" and 4.25".

If you plan to batton then a blade of around 4" would probably be needed. If not then the extra inch wont be of much extra use and will be harder to control for finer work.
