I was using my old phone, an XDA Orbit 2, to run as a SatNav in the car & to use MemoryMap for navigation (and a stop me being lost tool) while out in the woods. The screen has gone on it & I am looking for a replacement (2nd hand off ebay probably) that has GPS, runs windows mobile, has a relativly large screen & than can work with an O2 PAYG SIM card.

Can anyone recommend a phone that can do all that & is better than the OS XDA Orbit. I dont want to spend lots on it but it's a useful tool to have in the car & when out walking. Ta

For me it would be a toss up the xda flint or the xda Zest.

Thanks. I like the idea of the Flint but at £300 plus I could get a mini laptop for that kind of money; if I could find one £150 ish then I might be tempted. I will look further. The Zest looks like a contender, as it goes for the same sort of money as the Orbit 2. I will need to research these a bit to see what they are like to own.

If only I could run TomTom and MemoryMap on my iPhone....

If you have the 3gs You can use tomtom.

Unfortunaltly I have the 3G version with GPS, which has been a nit of a dissapointment as far as GPS apps go as there is nothing good that I want that runs on it. I have heard the the device is too slow for most GPS apps like TomTom. Thanks for the update. I will have a look on the TomTom site to see if their code runs on my iPhone.

It looks like TomTom for the iPhone has just come out, for the 3G/3GS on the 15th of August & costs £59.99, so it's worth thinking about. Trouble is that it's MemoryMap I really want so I can use it when out on the Downs and in the woods. I will see if they do an iPhone version yet. Maybe I can do it all on the iPhone, if the battery is up to it.

windows mobile is frozen in development, and everything that isn't the iphone is probably going to be using linux by 2012. dunno that i would be looking for an old, potentially unsupported OS when there are plenty of phones that should do the job equally well. i'm looking at getting a nokia N900 within in the next year or two.

It therefore makes financial sense for Microsoft to focus on growing its key business and server software – Office, Exchange Server, SQL Server, SharePoint and so on – rather than defending the client versions. This is particularly true for Windows Mobile, which brings in hardly any money. (Roughly 20m sales at an estimated $7-$8 is only $140m-$160m.)

Thanks for that, The idea was that I used the mobile as backup phone, satnav & memory map platform, that would be kept in the car unless I am out walking. Ideally I would do it all on my main phone, which is an iPhone. TomTom is now out for the iPhone (it's on the Appstore now) so that just leaves the MemoryMap part, which it looks like they have no plans to port the app to the iPhone. I have quite a few MemoryMap maps so I would like to keep it if I can, as I can upload the data from one of my walks & see it on my home PC on the flatscreen in the lounge while putting my feet up with a beer after a walk on the downs; which I like, as it tells me how far I went, how many metres I climebd up/down etc. I also have MemoryMap on the CarPC, which is plugged into the car GPS reciever, so that I can get scrolling OS maps as you drive down country lanes, which has it's uses.

If I can get a newish WM 6 or 7 phone with GPS for around £50 then that will fit my needs; which seems doable on eBay. You can get OS maps on the iPhone but the software is iPhone only (AFAIK) and not that great, plus you have to buy all the maps again. Long term I will probably go to Android when my iPhone is up for renewel next spring.
