I have recently bought a spyderco manix 2, an older version with sabre grind. It is perfect for for my needs, the only issue was that the locking ball cage was broken.

I was thinking about taking it apart and glueing it, but doing some Googlefu, I have seen that this is a temporary fix.

I have seen since the Flytanium Manix 2 Ball Cage Lock parts.

So has anyone else had the same issue, how did you fix it, if not sending it to the USA. Also, if anyone has a spare, please let me know.

I was thinking about doing that, the issue is they don't have a customer service base in the UK, so have to send it off.

I have had trouble in the past sending bits to the US under warranty. Wanted to avoid that if possible...

Sal and co are very interested in breakages and failures, you won’t have a problem. I’d certainly email them with pics and see what they say. Also, you mentioned slight blade play, that would also be sorted.

So I got a reply from spyderco, send it in and they will look at it. However, run the risk of it being replaced rather than repaired.

The sabre ground manix 2 has been a grail knife for years, not everyones choice as the flat grind is really good and excels at everything.

So cost insured to US via Royal mail has been quoted at £28, add spyderco $5 token repair fee....plus run the risk of my grail knife being lost, kind of leaning on repairing it myself.

Yeah, I can get that, it’s more than what you paid for it. Personally, I’d do it, I’d send it uninsured and swallow the loss if things went south. But it’s not a grail knife to me so I understand your reticence to let it go just after you got your muddy paws on it. I had one of the EDC Forums glow in the dark Manix 2 runs with full flat grind, lots of fun and very, very special but found it too bulky and wide in my pocket. The big old original Manix, that’s another story, and one I’d redesign my trouser pockets around. ;)

I know, typical :)

Issue would be the same as my current one at some point, the clear polymor ball bearing cage is weak and a known issue.

So the brass ball bearing cage came for my manix today, after putting the babies to bed, and while my lovely wife was watching 'married at first sight' I got to work taking the manix apart.

Now I wanted to take a few pictures, but the fix was so quick and simple. So here is the finished repair

The brass looks great, so really makes you wonder why spyderco use plastic?

A really simple fix or upgrade for every manix fan, it is a little stiff to unlock the blade when flicking out the blade, but should break in nicely.

I got the part from knivesandtools.co.uk, if anyone else wants to have a go.
