Originally from my blog (there's more there too...)
I occasionally (ok - quite often) like to whittle away at sticks. Sometimes it's idle whittling and sometimes it has a purpose. The purpose does, not sure what this says of my carving skills, seem to end in more wood chips and sawdust than anything crafty. But I find the act of carving relaxing.
One of the things I like to make is small bits of "woodland jewellery". Small bits of highly polished wood that just look nice. Here is one:
This is simply a section taken through a stick that I've sanded and varnished. Then I've threaded a leather strip through it and tied a fishermans knot so it's adjustable for wearing. The disc of wood is about the size of a 2p coin. Kind of looks nicer in the flesh. And not to sound too hippy - lets you have something of the woodlands with you all the time.
