If I put 2 x summer sleeping bags one inside the other will this increase the "R" rated value of said bags. Likewise if I make a foam mat and Tin foil sandwich will this cut down further on conduction, any thoughts OH WISE ONES.

massive steak sandwich before bed and a hot water bottle.
why not just say bollox to it and get your self a pritty little miss to warm said sleeping bags up before u get in and then u will at least have something to cuddle in the night
There's a formula for pairing up bags like this on the web somewhere, I think it's something like half the rating of the lightest (coolest) bag is added to the value of the warmest bag ....
Bag 1 = 30 degrees rating (coolest)
Bag 2 = 10 degrees rating (warmest)
Half the 30* = 15*
10* + 15* = 0.5* combined rating (not 25* as that's making the combination cooler)
I've probably got that wrong so best to check it before setting out. No idea on the foil thing, I'd say it'll probably reflect your heat back towards you but I don't know how effective it is. I know some folk use those windscreen reflectors as mats, with the silver side up I think, bad for condensation though.
Looks a bit complex for me I'll just give it a go when out next.
I leave her at home with the kids
