There's times when you've forgotten a lead for your dog but you've got rope, or I found myself in that situation. So what quick knot would you use?

Criteria - no sticking out loose ends, it could work with thinner rope up to say stiff 8mm, quick to tie to a D-ring on the collar, and not be too bulky if possible .

I only ask because I've just had to use an 8mm rope as all our leads were in the car my partner went out in. So I cut the only rope I could find. I tried two round turns and two half inches, a few bodge it knots and tried to tie a kind of clove hitch onto the line made up of the rest of the rope around the collar ring. Everything was too bulky or left the loose end sticking into the dog. Anything too uncomfortable for the dog and he she stops moving.

I am no knot expert so all I can think of is to make it into a lead around a karabiner. Sort of stitching the loose end into a loop. I figure stitching through the two thicknesses of the rope around the krab then wrap the thread around and stitch it again. Just an idea but the knot idea of possible would allow a simple lead made out of just a rope.

Dog is a border terrier. Not big or strong but for it's size it's got a good pull on it if it wants.

I’m not sure I’m envisaging what you are asking but:

What’s wrong with a bowline into the D ring in the collar and a bowline to form a hand loop?

If you’ve got double the length that you want then just shove a bite through the D ring and the ends through the bite. That’s not quick release, the bowline solution is much quicker release.

The Bowline was a bit bulky when in tried it. Well first I messed it up a few times as I'm really only used to tying it onto a krab attached to my harness when climbing (although I did tend to use a figure of 8 more when climbing).

Perhaps if there was a way of passing more of the rope through the D-ring then using a knot that is tied around the rope higher up and grips it at that point. Is it called a constrictor knot.

I actually tried to work out a knot like that but gave up when the faffing around with a dog pulling on the collar to get home and went to a simple bit bulky Bowline again.

Oh damn! You can tie a bowline with a big loop too. In just pull enough loose end v through and do the loop it's tied around at the right spot to keep the knot higher up.

If you have a spike on your Swiss Army knife just open the lay and stick the End through it far enough up the lead to be out of the way. No knot required.

I would probably double the rope over, larks foot onto the D ring and then any loop knot for a hand loop (I would probably double a rethreaded figure 8 loop). That way all the ends are not at the dog end and nothing to work loose at the dog end.

Wouldn’t work with a short rope though
