Question about stalking ground access

HI,
I'm doing my DSC1 this week, and I've been thinking about taking this further after I (hopefully) pass the course this weekend.
How do you go about securing land to stalk on? I presume it's either one of 2 approaches.

1) knock on farmers doors and ask about
2) join a syndicate.

Deer management groups, Forestry Commission, plenty of stalking advertised in classifieds ST, SG etc.
I always pack a rifle when we go to Scotland wildfowling only once had a problem securing stalking when I wanted it and always haggle over the price unless its a trophy you want.
