Pre Mac shelf life

Would anyone out there have any idea how long the shelf life of a Pre Mac water filter is? Is it an indefinate amount of time or, because they have an iodine content, do they stop being effective after a period of time?

I asked this question of an outdoors instructor some time ago and was told that the lifespan was linked to the quantity of water the unit would purify, rather than shelf life.

However, I would agree that the best thing would be to check with Pre Mac direct, especially if you're going to depend upon it.
