Pot & Shot

The bioys had a day off school today as their teachers were undergoing "Teacher Training", thought they went to University to do that and they certainly didn't have days off for "Training" when i was at school, anyway, they wanted to do a few things, Eldest wanted to make a pot out of some of the Bamboo i have here, so we grabbed a suitable piece, cut it up into sections and away he went making a bamboo pot for the kitchen

First job, scrape down the surface with a mix of my draw knife and cabinet scrapers

next job sand the edges down to make sure there are no splinters or sharp corners

Then oil it all up with a some linseed oil

No photo of the finished pot yet though, as apparently it's not finished yet, youngest was out with his Nan while we were doing this, which is why he's not around in these pics,

This small project took us up to lunch time, after which, the boys spent some time with the air rifle my mate gave them

youngest having a go (the bi pod is just there to steady the gun for the boys), they are shooting approx 25 yards into a pellet trap

Eldest is a crack shot, his forst shot was dead centre on the target card, he moved on to standing shots shortly after this photo was taken so he could get used to using the rifle standing and kneeling for when we go bunny shooting.

Youngest having a crack, he's not a bad shot either, he's right handed, but shoots left handed as he finds it far far easier and this was obvious once he started shooting left handed as his accuracy improved no end.

He's a bit cack handed at this tbh and the stock is a bit long for him as well, but he's getting there, the photo above foreshortens the image a bit and his grip is not nearly as cramped and awkward as it looks.

Seriously though, teaching your boys skills in a fun environment is what most lads want. You're a good man.

Interesting to see him firing left handed, I'm guessing he's left eye dominant rather than left handed per se. My Granddad was always fun, a lefty forced to be righty by the conventions of the time, but when it came to shooting that wasn't an issue as he was right eye dominant as most are, meaning it was to his advantage to shoot righty.
Look forwards to seeing some shots of the finished pot, it should be nice.

That pot looks great. TBH, those clamp on bipods are rubbish - they knacker the barrel harmonics and shift the point of zero. t They would be better off resting the forend of the stock on a wadded up coat on top of a pile of bricks.

Bring em up here some time and I'll take em to the range

Cool stuff Kepis! The pot is looking great and your oldest is definitely having fun! I am right handed, left eye dominant just like your youngest. I shoot my long guns left handed and my handguns right handed, all using my dominant left eye. Though awkward at first, learning to use my left hand for the trigger press and the right hand for the support function utimately made things easier, when shooting long guns. Offered as a very friendly suggetion, have your youngest switch hands and see if it might prove easier to shoot. Keep up the great family quality time! I always enjoy your posts!

Cheers for the comments everyone, the boys loved shooting the air rifle yesterday, they did half a tin of pellets between them and 99% went in the pellet trap, so not too bad, the other ones smashed harmlessy into the backstop we have, youngest got his grip sorted out in the end and ended up with a left hand trigger and right arm supporting the gun, made things much easier for him, he's still cack handed though - lol, he will get there in the end though, mind you the other thing i should mention that i forgot was he only came out from surgery on his left arm last week and still has stitches, another reason to use the bi pod

Your wish is our command, his pot (the tall one) along side two smaller squatter ones i made and a small simple Hazel Shrink pot i made.

The Bamboo still needs a bit of cleaning up with the cabinet scrappers, we are not too worried about the insides as they are only going to be used for holding spoons and spatulas, but it will be nice to get a cleaner nicer finish on the outside.

The bamboo came from a friend and business aquantance, i ordered some stock from him and he turned up with one of these bamboo poles strapped to his truck as a gift, he has about 500 more apparently in his yard
