Hi guys, Im looking for a balaclava in microfleece or similar warm fabric (for camping out these chilly evenings nights)
In particular Im looking for something that extends to cover the neck and has an open face that has a draw string arrangement that can close up the face area if necassary. I have found that the area of the balaclava mouth needs to beopen to the air otherwise condensation forms on the inside which makes it damp-and cold-any ideas Prefarably in black-sorry to be so fussy!
Cheers Ivan

Hi Ivan,

This isn't much help I know, but I have a very similar item in Gore windstopper fleece and it's great. There isn't a draw-string opening, and the mouth area is made of thin, non-windstopper fleece which works well, although you do still get some condensation.

I'm pretty sure I got it from Field & Trek, but that was a few years ago now. When I get home I'll have a look and see what make it is - that might help you track one down.

On second thoughts it's probably too warm for what you're after, it's more mountain walking than camping really.

Have you thought of making one - how hard can it be?!? That way you get exactly what you want.

I got the sort of thing you describe for Christmas, but unfortunately for you I'm fairly sure it was from a craft market, so not easily available. There were some instructions, so I could have a look for a url.

It's like an extra long balaclava with some drawcords, but the unusual bit is that you fold the bottom neck bit in on itself so that it appears in the face hole. This is a bit hard to describe. It's now more a normal size balaclava but you have more control over how much face is exposed. I'll try and sort out some pictures or links, because I've made a dog's dinner of describing it! :D Anyway, my point it is, I think it would be fairly easy to make in a material of your choice.

[edit] This is the sort of thing. The orange colour is the configuration I describe.[/edit]
